ART BASEL is the perfect time of the year to explore Miami.  The city comes alive with exhibitions, art shows, street festivals events and parties.  It’s winter here but the weather doesn’t say so.  The ocean is warm, the water is clear and the sky is blue…

My favourite way to explore a city (and work out while your at it!) is by foot and nothing beats getting out of the hustle and bustle of a busy city than taking a hike.  Check out the Florida Hikes website (here) for a great list of ocean, park and trail hikes.

For the full Miami beach day experience, hire a sun bed and order cocktails or coconuts as you soak in the rays and watch the waves come in.  South beach is beautifully clean and the water is equally clear, as pretty as it gets for a city beach!  There is a huge stretch of white sand and the water is deep turquoise.  Even the lifeguard stands are art deco masterpieces.  The spacious stretch of sand is perfect for beach jogs and if you hang around at night the neon lights and beautifully restored art deco architecture are great to look at.  There are tons of restaurants and hotels along the beach to hang out at after your day in the sun.
This paradise is only a bus ride away, located just off the coast of mainland Florida.  Here you will find Fort Zachary Taylor State Park with wide stretches of white sand and calm waters.  You can rent kayaks, go snorkelling or parasailing, rent a bike and ride around the fort to find secluded beaches and picnic spots.  Key West is the perfect day trip adventure spot!
Only a 30min drive from South Beach you will find Cape Florida.  Spacious white sand beach with shallow water and a light wind.  Protected and maintained by the  state park  a beautiful place for a day trip.   Cape Florida is currently ranked #7 on the top 10 beaches in America.   Make sure you check out the historic lighthouse on south end.  Sunbathe, swim, picnic hire a beach chair and umbrella or visit ‘Dr Beach’ for Biking and Kayaking.  There are two restaurants but I suggest stopping by wholefoods and bringing a picnic lunch.
Even if you don’t make it to Miami for Art Basel the Wynwood Art District is an amazing place to see.  With over 70 galleries, museums and art collections.  Art studios, and outdoor murals exhibit work of famous street artists making it one of the biggest street art districts in the world.  This colourful place comes alive on the second Saturday night of every month when ‘Art Walk’ is on.  This means the art galleries and studios are open to public – check out the website for info on tours, collections and exhibitions here
